Matsuyama-shitsugen hosts communities of Scirpus caespitosus-Sphagnum tenellum, Carex pauciflora-S. magellanicum, Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-S. fuscum, Rhynchospora alba-S. tenellum and C. limosa, and swamp forests of Picea glehnii. Piyashiri-shitsugen is small in size, covering an area of 3.5 ha. It supports Scheuchzeria palustris-R. alba and S. magellanicum communities. Rubus chamaemorus, Cornus suecica and Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum are also found.
Insects Matsuyama-shitusgen Dragonflies are found in abundance and Protocalliphora azurea occurs in the bogs.
