Lakes and marshes, Lagoon, Estuaries with tidal flat Wetland vegetation Ogawara-ko and neighboring wetlands (including Obuchi-numa, Takahoko-numa, Ichiyanagi-numa, Tamogi-numa and Takase-gawa) Forests of Alnus japonica and aquatic plant communities occur in these wetlands. More than 53 aquatic plant species are identified.
Aquatic plants Lakes and marshes in Shimokita-hanto Lakes and marshes found in an area from Obuchi-numa (marsh) to Ogawara-ko (lake). Aquatic plant communities with a high species diversity are formed. Except for some part, these lakes and marshes are well endowed with nature.
Freshwater algae Ichiyanagi-numa Habitat of Chara braunii, classified as Endangered (EN) or Critically Endangered (CR).
Geese and ducks Ogawara-ko and neighboring wetlands (paddies and Obuchi-numa) Stopover sites of Cygnus cygnus and C. columbianus. Takahoko-numa, Ichiyanagi-numa and Tamogi-numa (marshes) are breeding sites of Podiceps cristatus.
Insects Ogawara-ko and neighboring wetlands (including Obuchi-numa, Takahoko-numa, Ichiyanagi-numa, Tamogi-numa and Takase-gawa) Habitat of Mortonagrion selenion, Sympetrum uniforme, Gerris babai, Euconomelus lepidus and Gargara doenitzi. Among the lakes and marshes found in southern part of Shimokita-hanto (peninsula), included in this wetland site are those located in Rokkasho-mura (village). They are, from north to south, Obuchi-numa, Takahoko-numa, Ichiyanagi-numa and Tamogi-numa. The first two are brackish marshes connected to the Pacific Ocean. They have shallow lakefronts covered by marsh plant communities. No endemic insects species has been recorded, but they provide a unique environment in which brackish marshes, along with adjoining grasslands, are preserved under cold climate. Although a thorough study is yet to be conducted, these marshes support many valuable insects, including species that are found to occur only at these sites in Aomori Prefecture or Honshu (mainland of Japan).
Freshwater shellfish Lakes and marshes in Shimokita-hanto Rich in species diversity. Habitat of Culmenella rezvoji, classified as Endangered (EN) or Critically Endangered (CR), Margaritifera laevis (classified as Vulnerable (VU)), and Potamocorbula amurensis.
Benthos Ogawara-ko and neighboring wetlands (including Obuchi-numa, Takahoko-numa, Ichiyanagi-numa, Tamogi-numa and Takase-gawa) Habitat of Corbicula japonica and Macoma takahokoensis (a rare species).
