Rivers in
Iriomote-jima
These rivers have a high diversity of subtropical freshwater fish, such as Crenimugil heterocheios. Toxotes jaculator and Lutjanus goldiei are found in Urauchi-gawa (river), and Rhyacichthys aspro in the upper reaches of Omija-gawa and Nakama-gawa.
Crustaceans Mangrove
forests and
estuary of
Urauchi-gawa
As the brackish zone of Urauchi-gawa supports many peripheral freshwater fish and crustaceans, and freshwater zone supports rare or vulnerable crustaceans and gobies, the entire river basin is important. The mangrove channels are inhabited by valuable tropical species such as Toxotes jaculator and Lutjanus goldiei, and upstream area supports valuable landlocked species such as Macrobrachium shokitai, Neocaridina brevirostris and Geothelphusa minei.
Benthos Estuary of
Urauchi-gawa
This estuary is rich in benthos specific to mangrove wetlands. It is the sole place in Japan where Macrophthalmus (Venitus) latreillei is observed in the intertidal zone.
