Funaura-wan Habitat of Kandelia candel, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, Lunmitzrea racemosa and Nypa fruticans. Rare distribution site of mangrove tree species. Geographically rare distribution site of mangrove forests. Representative and endemic distribution site of mangrove forest ecosystems. High diversity of mangrove forest ecosystems.
Crustaceans Funaura-shicchi and its inflowing rivers Three large and small rivers (Nishida-gawa, Hinai-gawa and Yassa-gawa) flow into Funaura-wan (bay), where well-developed mangrove forests are found. In particular, Funaura is the northernmost distribution site for Nypa fruticans. In the forests, waterways and outer tidal flat, many tropical fish species are found, and sharks and rays wander into the bay at high tide. The mangrove forests and the surrounding areas support 5 species listed in the RDB of Japan or Okinawa Prefecture (Caridina brevicarpalis, Uca triangularis triangularis, Utica borneensis, Philyra iriomotensis and Birgus latro). The inflowing rivers and the riparian land areas support 5 species listed in the RDB of Japan or Okinawa Prefecture (Neocaridina brevirostris, Macrobrachium shokitai, Geothelphusa minei, Ryukyum yaeyamense and Birgus latro) and 4 Coenobita species designated as National Natural Monuments (Coenobita cavipes, C. rugosus, C. brevimanus and C. violascens). Thus the entire river basin is important.
Benthos Funaura The site encompasses extensive mangrove wetlands which are densely inhabited by Terebralia palustris. Tidal flat area supports a large number of Plicarcularia bellula and Listriolobus riukiuensis.
