Mangrove forests |
Nakama-gawa |
Habitat of Kandelia candel, Bruguiera gymnorhiza,
Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, Lunmitzrea racemosa
and Sonneratia alba, the forest of which is collectively
designated as a National Natural Monument. Rare distribution site
of mangrove tree species. Geographically rare distribution site
of mangrove forests. Representative and endemic distribution site
of mangrove forest ecosystems. High diversity of mangrove forest
ecosystems. |
Freshwater fish |
Rivers in Iriomote-jima |
Rich in species diversity of subtropical freshwater
fish, such as Crenimugil heterocheios. Toxotes jaculator
and Lutjanus goldiei are found in Urauchi-gawa (river), and
Rhyacichthys aspro in the upper reaches of Omija-gawa and
Nakama-gawa. |
| Crustaceans |
Mangrove forests and estuary of Nakama-gawa |
As Nakama-gawa and its tributaries support 3 rare
species listed in the RDB (Neocaridina brevirostris, Macrobrachium
shokitai and Geothelphusa minei), the entire river basin
is important. In recent years, a possibly new Neocaridina sp. has
been discovered in a tributary of Nakama-gawa. |
| Benthos |
Estuaries of Nakama-gawa, Shiira-gawa and Maira-gawa |
These areas encompass some of the largest mangrove wetlands in Japan. They have a rich species diversity in benthos, specific to mangrove wetlands. |
