Caves and spring lines in Miyako-jima |
While there are few rivers and streams
in Miyako-jima (island), it is blessed with extensive underground
water systems. There are also many wet caves, supporting Caridina
rubella and C. sakishimensis (both rare species listed
on RDB), Cardisoma hirtipes (a protected species of Hirara-shi
city), and Pisidium cavernicum (endemic to Miyako-jima and
a protected species of Hirara-shi city). Recently, a new species
belonging to the family Potamonidae was discovered from a
spring in Gusukube-cho town. |
