Seagrasses Nearshore waters of eastern side of Okinawa-honto (from Henoko to Kanna) Large communities of Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata and C. rotundata occur in this coastal area. Dugong, a Special Natural Monument of Japan, which feeds on seagrasses including Zostera spp., is frequently spotted in this sea area. From past surveys, it is known that seagrass beds exist off the shore of the northeastern part of Okinawa-honto (i.e., Okinawa Island), which are thought to be large-scale feeding grounds of green turtle Chelonia mydas.
