river basin
The site covers the area from downstream Namizato to Kisenbaru, including Kanna Dam. Though the best wetland is located within the U.S. Army base, wetland environment is also found in surrounding areas outside the base. It is one of the few places in Okinawa where occurrence of Lethocerus deyrollei and Diplonychus rusticus was recorded in the past. Even now, there are many aquatic hemipterans such as Ranatra unicolor (a rare species listed in the RDB of Okinawa Prefecture), and Saldoida armata.
Benthos Estuary of
Okukubi-
gawa
The site encompasses a variety of habitats from estuarine to coastal tidal flats, accompanied by an extremely high benthos diversity. Relatively unaffected by anthropogenic destruction such as bank protection works compared to other places in the main island of Okinawa, it is one of the estuaries well endowed with nature.
