Wetland complex including bogs, Rivers, Lakes and marshes Wetland vegetation Kushiro-shitsugen (including Aka-numa, Touro-ko, Takkobu-numa, Toya-saisochi and Shirarutoro-ko) Extensive fens. Vegetation here includes communities of Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii, Myrica gale var. tomentosa-C. lasiocarpa var. occultans, C. lyngbyei and forests of Alnus japonica. The fen floor vegetation is characterized by many Carex caespitosa tussocks called "yachi-bozu", Spiraea salicifolia, Calla palustris, Stellaria longifolia and Thelypteris palustris. Vegetation of the mixed bogs and bogs in Onnenai-Aka-numa (marsh) and in the area around Kirakotan-misaki (cape) includes communities of Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-Sphagnum fuscum, Eriophorum vaginatum-S. papillosum, Scheuchzeria palustris-Rhynchospora alba and L. p. ssp. diversipilosum-Calamagrostis stricta var. aculeolata. Ponds and marshes abound in aquatic plant communities. A wide variety of Sphagnum spp. are also found. Aegagropila linnaei grows in Takkobu-numa (marsh).
Aquatic plants Kushiro-shitsugen (Shirarutoro-ko and Takkobu-numa) [Shirarutoro-ko]: This lake offers excellent habitat for many hydrophytes including threatened species such as Potamogeton praelongus and Sagittaria natans. It has undergone rapid changes in recent years.
[Takkobu-numa]: This marsh exceeds any other lake and marsh within Kushiro-shitsugen in terms of the aquatic plant species diversity and their abundance. It has undergone rapid changes in recent years.
Geese and ducks Kushiro-shitsugen (Shirarutoro-ko, Aka-numa, Touro-ko, Takkobu-numa, Toya-saisochi) Stopover sites of Cygnus cygnus, Anser fabalis serrirostris and A. f. middendorffii.
Other birds Kushiro-shitsugen Habitat of Grus japonensis. Over 30% of the total number of the nests built is found here.
Freshwater fish Habitat of Hucho perryi in Konsen-genya This wetland site encompasses large and small rivers in Konsen-genya, such as the Ichani-gawa, Shibetsu-gawa, Tohoro-gawa, Shunbetsu-gawa, Tokotan-gawa, Nishibetsu-gawa, Furen-gawa, Biwase-gawa, Bekambeushi-gawa, Kushiro-gawa and Akan-gawa, and lakes and marshes in the vicinity, all of which are inhabited by Hucho perryi and Phoxinus percnurus sachalinensis. The marsh located in the Isobunnai Area in the middle reaches of the Kushiro-gawa is inhabited by Lefua nikkonis.
Reptiles and amphibians Kushiro-shitsugen Habitat of Salamandrella keyserlingii.
Insects Kushiro-shitsugen Habitat of Nehalennia speciosa, Erythromma humerale, Lestes dryas, Aeschna subarctica, Somatochlora japonica, S. graeseri aureola, S. arctica and Leucorrhinia intermedia ijimai. Abounds in insects of swamp-origin, such as E. humerale, L. intermedia ijimai, Aeschna subarctica, Prasocuris phelandrii, Hydaticus aruspex, Dytiscus dauricus and Ommatidiotus dissimilis.
Freshwater shellfish Nemuro Wetlands, Bekambeushi-shitsugen and Kushiro-shitsugen Valvata spp. and Pisidium spp. Rich in species diversity of boreal shellfish.
