Wetland vegetation Kiritappu-shitsugen and Poroto-shitsugen Communities of Moliniopsis japonica-Sphagnum papillosum, M. japonica-S. fuscum, M. japonica-Eriophorum vaginatum, M. japonica-Carex lasiocarpa var. occultans, C. limosa, Rhynchospora alba and Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii, and forests of Alnus japonica. Communities of various aquatic plants including Brasenia schreberii, Trapa japonica and Potamogeton natans.
Seagrasses Poroto-numa A brackish marsh located in Poroto-shitsugen, where Zostera japonica occurs.
Seagrasses Nearshore waters of Hamanaka Habitat of Zostera asiatica.
Geese and ducks Biwase-wan Stopover site of Branta bernicla.
Other birds Kiritappu-shitsugen and Poroto-numa Habitat of Grus japonensis. About 5% of the total number of the nests built is found here.
Freshwater fish Habitat of Hucho perryi in Konsen-genya This wetland site encompasses large and small rivers in Konsen-genya, such as the Ichani-gawa, Shibetsu-gawa, Tohoro-gawa, Shunbetsu-gawa, Tokotan-gawa, Nishibetsu-gawa, Furen-gawa, Biwase-gawa, Bekambeushi-gawa, Kushiro-gawa and Akan-gawa, and lakes and marshes in the vicinity, all of which are inhabited by Hucho perryi and Phoxinus percnurus sachalinensis.
Insects Kiritappu-shitsugen This wetland provides habitat for Nehalennia speciosa, Lestes dryas, Aeschna subarctica, Somatochlora arctica, Sympetrum flaveolum flaveolum and Leucorrhinia dubia orientalis. Many boreal species of grassland origin, such as Aphelia septentrionalis, Pennisetia hylaeiformis, Leucorrhinia dubia orientalis, Nehalennia speciosa, Aeschna subarctica, Cychrus morawitzi and Procrustes kolbei aino, are found. The site abounds in water striders including Gerris rufoscutellatus genitalis, G. babai and G. latiabdominis as well as dragonfly species.
