Wetland vegetation Furengawa- shitsugen The site constitutes a wetland that extends over the lower reaches of the Furen-gawa (river), which flows into Furen-ko (lake). This immense fen have had relatively small impact of human activity. Vegetation in this fen mainly consists of communities of Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii, Myrica gale var. tomentosa-Carex lasiocarpa var.occultans, C. lyngbyei, Menyanthes trifoliata and forests of Alnus japonica, but occurring intermingled with it are communities of various hummocks of Sphagnum species including S. magellanicum, S. subfulvum, S. imbricatum, S. fimbriatum and S. palustre. The central part of the fen supports the Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-S. fuscum communities, with marked development of Sphagnum fuscum hummocks. The site also supports Calamagrostis stricta var. aculeolata, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum and Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum.
Wetland vegetation Hashirikotan- shitsugen This wetland extends along the north shore of Furen-ko and over the lower reaches of the Nishibetsu-gawa (river). It provides nesting sites for Grus japonensis. It supports communities of Moliniopsis japonica-Sphagnum papillosum, Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-S. fuscum, Myrica gale var. tomentosa-Carex lasiocarpa var. occultans, C. lyngbyei, Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii and forests of Alnus japonica.
Wetland vegetation Furenko- shitsugen, Shunkuni-tai and Onne-to Salt marsh vegetation, including communities of Triglochin maritimum and Carex subspathacea, mainly covers these areas. There also occur Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia, Spergularia marina, Potentilla egedei var. grandis, Puccinellia pumila and Juncus gracillimus. In the freshwater marsh, there are communities of Scirpus tabernaemontani, Typha latifolia, Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis stricta var. aculeolata and P. communis-Carex lyngbyei, forests of Alnus japonica-Fraxinus mandshurica var. japonica, and sand dune forests of Picea glehnii (Lysichitum camtschatcense dominates the forest floor).
Seagrasses Marine algae Furen-ko Immense tidal flats and Zostera beds (Z. marina and Z. japonica). The beds are found virtually everywhere in the Lake. It hosts communities of Z. marina and Z. japonica and is also an important spawning and nursery ground for Clupea pallasii and Oncorhynchus keta. One lake kelp species occurs in fairly large quantities within a water route stretching from nearshore waters of Hashirikotan to the mouth of the lake.
Seagrasses Onne-to Habitat of Zostera japonica.
Shorebirds Furen-ko Relatively many bird species are observed in relatively large population sizes during the spring and autumn migrating seasons. Visitation of more than 1% of the minimum estimated population of Haematopus ostralegus, Charadrius mongolus and Heteroscelus brevipes and more than 0.25% of that of Arenaria interpres, Tringa erythropus, T. nebularia and Calidris alpina has been recorded. Visitation of Eurynorhynchus pygmeus, Himantopus himantopus, T. totanus, Numenius madagascariensis and Gallinago hardwickii (all RDB species) has also been recorded.
Geese and ducks Furen-ko and Onne-to Stopover sites of Cygnus cygnus, Anser fabalis serrirostris, Branta bernicla, Anas penelope, A. acuta, Aythya marila and Bucephala clangula.
Other birds Furen-ko and neighboring wetlands (Shunkuni-tai, Hashirikotan- shitsugen, Onne-to, Furen-gawa and its tributaries, Yaushubetsu- gawa and Ponyaushubetsu- gawa) Habitat of Grus japonensis. Over 25% of the total number of the nests built is found here.
Freshwater fish Habitat of Hucho perryi in Konsen-genya This wetland site encompasses large and small rivers in Konsen-genya, such as the Ichani-gawa, Shibetsu-gawa, Tohoro-gawa, Shunbetsu-gawa, Tokotan-gawa, Nishibetsu-gawa, Furen-gawa, Biwase-gawa, Bekambeushi-gawa, Kushiro-gawa and Akan-gawa, and lakes and marshes in the vicinity, all of which are inhabited by Hucho perryi and Phoxinus percnurus sachalinensis.
