Wetland vegetation Wetlands in Nemuro-hanto (Nemurohanto-shitsugen, Horonitai- Fureshima- shitsugen, Tanne-to, Onne-to, Nanbu-to, Choboshi-numa, Ochiishi-misaki-shitsugen, Ochiishinishi-shitsugen and Ochiishi-shitsugen) Bogs have developed in the plateau of Habomai. The main vegetation includes communities of Moliniopsis japonica-Sphagnum papillosum, Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-S. fuscum, Carex lasiocarpa var. occultans and Sparganium, and forests of Alnus hirsuta. The sites abound in Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum, Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum, Spiraea betulifolia var. aemiliana, Vaccinium uliginosum, V. vitis-idaea, Cornus suecica, Carex oligosperma and Leucobryum bowringii. Wetland vegetation found in Ochiishi-misaki (cape) and the plateau in the vicinity includes swamp forests of Picea glehnii and communities of Moliniopsis japonica-Sphagnum papillosum and Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-S. fuscum. Isolated distribution of Rhododendron lapponicum ssp. parvifolium occurs in Ochiishi-misaki. In the wetland around lowland lakes on the seashore have developed fens dominated by Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii and Myrica gale var. tomentosa-Carex lasiocarpa var. occultans communities. At the water's edge, there occur communities of Carex lyngbyei, Scirpus tabernaemontani, Typha latifolia and other aquatic plants.
Aquatic plants Nanbu-to, Onne-to and Choboshi-numa These marshes have a high diversity of species such as Nuphar pumilum and submerged Potamogeton species. Particularly, Nanbu-to and Onne-to (marshes), whose natural environment has remained undamaged, still retain the lake vegetation indigenous to the eastern part of Hokkaido.
Other birds Wetlands in Nemuro (Fureshima-shitsugen, Tanne-to, Onne-to, Hikiusu-to and Okinebe-numa) Habitat of Grus japonensis. About 4% of the total number of the nests built is found here.
Insects Ochiishi-misaki Habitat of Vacciniina optilete daisetsuzana, Agabus affinis and Bombus florilegus.
Freshwater shellfish Nemuro Wetlands, Bekambeushi-shitsugen and Kushiro-shitsugen Valvata spp. and Pisidium spp. Rich in species diversity of boreal shellfish.
