[Barasanto-shitsugen] : It is a fen
which hosts communities of Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis
langsdorffii, Myrica gale var. tomentosa-Carex lasiocarpa
var. occultans, C. lyngbyei, Iris laevigata and C. limosa-Eriophorum
gracile, and forests of Alnus japonica. [Barasan-to (marsh)]:
It hosts communities of hydrophytes including Scirpus tabernaemontani,
Zizania latifolia and Brasenia schreberii. [Kanekin-to / Nishibetsugawa-shitsugen]:
An extensive valley wetland remains in the vicinity of Kanekin-to
and Nishibetsu-konuma (marshes) in the Nishibetsu-gawa basin where
communities of Ledum palustre ssp. diversipilosum-Sphagnum
fuscum, Moliniopsis japonica-S. papillosum, M. japonica-Carex lasiocarpa
var. occultans and Phragmites communis-Calamagrostis langsdorffii,
and forests of Alnus japonica are found. This wetland is
important as one of the nesting sites of Grus japonensis.
In the upperstream area of Nishibetsu-gawa occurs isolated distribution
of Betula ovalifolia and there are fens supporting rare plant
species such as Carex gynocrates and C. mackenziei. |

This wetland site encompasses large
and small rivers in Konsen-genya, such as the Ichani-gawa, Shibetsu-gawa,
Tohoro-gawa, Shunbetsu-gawa, Tokotan-gawa, Nishibetsu-gawa, Furen-gawa,
Biwase-gawa, Bekambeushi-gawa, Kushiro-gawa and Akan-gawa, and lakes
and marshes in the vicinity, all of which are inhabited by Hucho
perryi and Phoxinus percnurus sachalinensis. |
