Shibetsu-shitsugen has been designated as a National
Natural Monument. It hosts communities of Ledum palustre
ssp. diversipilosum-Sphagnum fuscum, Moliniopsis japonica-S.
fuscum and M. japonica-Carex middendorffii, and forests
of Alnus japonica. It abounds in Cornus suecica, Empetrum
nigrum var. japonicum, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Coptis trifolia
and Carex pauciflora. |

This wetland site encompasses large and small rivers
in Konsen-genya, such as the Ichani-gawa, Shibetsu-gawa, Tohoro-gawa,
Shunbetsu-gawa, Tokotan-gawa, Nishibetsu-gawa, Furen-gawa, Biwase-gawa,
Bekambeushi-gawa, Kushiro-gawa and Akan-gawa, and lakes and marshes
in the vicinity, all of which are inhabited by Hucho perryi and
Phoxinus percnurus sachalinensis. |
