Ogasawara-shoto |
The Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands rival the Nansei Islands as major breeding places of green turtle Chelonia mydas. The greatest number of eggs are laid on a sandy beach of Hatsuneura. This site is important as the sea area leading to the beach. Minami-jima (island) is the only egg-laying ground in the world that provides access to a sandy beach through an arched rock cave. The site is important from the standpoint of green turtles' egg-laying habits and behavior. |
