Animal life in the beech forest

Shirakami Sanchi is home to 14 medium to large mammals, such as the asian black bear (Ursus tribetanus) and the Japanese serow (Capricoris cripus), 84 birds, such as golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos japonica), Hodgson’s hawk-eagle (Spizaetus nipalensis orientalis), great black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), more than 2000 insect species, including rare and newly- discovered species, constituting a rich food-chain network.
