Beech blossoms open in early spring and, if pollinated, grow into beechmast, which looks like chestnut burs. The seeds are dispersed in the autumn. A rich harvest comes regularly every few years. Year 2000 provided a good harvest. A full-grown tree bears tens to hundreds of thousands of beechmast fruit, but many of them are hollow or eaten by insects while they are still on the tree. |
